According to an email correspondent who identified himself only as "Norman", the name of the chain came from the initials of the surnames of its two founders, Block and Quinn, who later sold out to Kingfisher (Woolworths). According to ITV Teletext in March 2004 the founders' names were Richard Block and David Quayle.
